Cal Supply Co. can help you select the best vacuum pump for your intended application.  We can provide bare pumps as well as complete vacuum systems.

“Vacuum” can be described as a negative pressure (one that is lower than atmospheric pressure). It is commonly measured in inches of Mercury (in. Hg) instead of pounds per square inch (PSI), which is used to measure positive pressure.  Where we define positive pressure as some number of PSI above atmospheric pressure, we define vacuum as some number of inches of Mercury below atmospheric pressure.  Where the vacuum is only slightly below atmospheric pressure, units of inches of Water are sometimes used to express the vacuum level.

Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump

For high vacuum applications a different point of reference is used.  Torr, or millimeters of Mercury, is referenced to a perfect vacuum (no air whatsoever).  A perfect vacuum is 0 Torr, and atmospheric pressure is 760 Torr.

Various levels of vacuum are used for various tasks.  These include holding objects onto a surface, forcing materials into molds, removing unwanted gases from materials, moving bulk materials through pipes (for both medical and industrial applications), drying materials, and removing air from packaging and processes where the presence of oxygen is detrimental.

Selecting a vacuum pump is a little more involved than selecting an air compressor.  With air compressors we know what we’re working with: atmospheric air.  With vacuum pumps we’re often working with air that has something else mixed in with it, and we have to be concerned about any effects this other material will have on the vacuum pump and the surrounding area to which the air is exhausted.
