Some applications require high volumes of compressed air in the range of 45 to 60 psi. A rotary screw compressor designed for operation in this range will use a smaller motor and consume less power than a machine designed for operation at a higher pressure. Special construction is required for satisfactory operation in this range.

Some applications require compressed air at 200 psi but are constrained by space, noise or cost considerations to use a modified rotary screw compressor rather than a reciprocating compressor .

A rotary screw compressor uses two intermeshed helical rotors (screws) within a precisely machined stator to compress air. As the rotors turn, their helical grooves trap air and seal against the stator wall. The volume of these grooves decreases as the rotors turn and mesh together, compressing the air while moving it to discharge port.
